Westboro Baptist taking their talents to a land much too Liberal

Recently, the world was finally blessed to see a current Division 1 men's basketball player come out of the closet for the everyone to see.  Derrick Gordon, a starting sophomore shooting guard for the University of Massachusetts, finally felt comfortable enough to express his true self. Just like all "major controversies,"  there are going to be supporters and there are going to be haters.  Fortunately for Gordon, most of the people he is surrounded by are supporters of not only him, but of all people.

Westboro Baptist (haters) felt the need to publicly lash out at Gordon, posting on their site:

UMass is just the latest institution to be exposed. The nation is flooded with aggressive out-of-the-closet fags.  They're everywhere.  Especially in the generation now darkening college campuses.  That's the generation that was taught in the cradle to hate God, mock His standard, and utterly reject the words of warning and hope from His servants.  Swing a cat and hit 50 fag students.  (Of a truth, Derrick Gordon never had a fighting chance.  He's lost to dark hopeless destruction, because of the selfish sins of his parents, preachers, teachers and leaders.)

In response, UMass students collectively wrote a letter back to the modern day Gestapo.  Although it was extremely supportive of Derrick and the cause behind him, I do think that the students of the school made a big mistake.

The letter triggered Westboro to travel all the way to Amherst, MA to protest the campus and Derrick on his sexuality.

In another response from the students of UMass, they are hosting a protest to protest the protest.  Hopefully by now you are starting to see a trend.

I love standing up for what I believe, but flicking a burning match into a puddle of gasoline just isn't the way to stop a Klan.  The followers of the Westboro Baptist Church are nothing more than a bully.  An insecure, ignorant, bully.  They thrive off controversy.  They love it.  The more controversy, the more the world gets to see them and the more they care about their "cause."

To UMass students, and fellow haters of Westboro Baptist, Derrick Gordon knew he wasn't going to make everyone happy.  There is just no way he didn't know that there would be doubters and screaming lunatics like Westboro.  What Derrick needs/wants is endless support from his piers.  He, nor any other lesbian, gay, black, caucasian, tall, fat, bearded, handicapped (wo)man gives two shits what a bunch of losers from Kansas thinks of them.  Derrick needs support and people like Westboro need controversy.  Spend your time supporting Derrick and everyone else instead of thinking of ways to put down Westboro Baptist...because, I can assure you, it will not work.

The National Collegiate Asshole Association (NCAA)

I'm going to start this blog by sarcastically clapping.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way I'm going to spend the next several hundred characters berating the NCAA.  All of the news flying around the NCAA lately has been about the unionization of Northwestern's football team (huge news).  This, once again, sparked the pay-for-play debate.  While there are valid points on both sides (I would like to admit that I am against paying collegiate athletes) the NCAA has blundered through this entire process.  Initially they said there was no way that collegiate "student-athletes" would be paid for their services.  Then after several of the more outspoken pro-pay advocates (see Jay Bilas' twitter account) they began to take some serious heat.  Then there was the Grambling State debacle which gave bad publicity to the NCAA for not taking care of their players.

Most recently the Northwestern case has taken this argument to a whole other level.  Now the judicial system is involved and is giving credence to the pay-for-play argument.  So how does the NCAA respond? By giving the players unlimited food and snacks.  Well golly, that'll just solve everything.  The NCAA really knows how to take care of their problems.  Instead of giving them what they want and are asking for they decided to simply feed their players properly and hope that solves all their issues. Wait what's that?  You said that only D1 athletes are allowed free food?  Well that's confusing because it seems that the NCAA is frequently pushing the "I Chose Division 2" motto around.  This seems pretty contradictory, and in fact quite hypocritical, of the NCAA.  And just think, at one point I wanted to be a D2 athlete.  Well I'm very glad I'm not now.  I can go home to cosmic brownies in my closet and wash them down with as many cold glasses of milk as I want.
